David Pérez was born in the South Bronx in New York City of parents of Puerto Rican descent. He started his writing career as a journalist in the late 70s, and then began writing personal essays. Since moving to Taos, New Mexico in 2004, he joined the writing staff at Tempo, the weekly arts and entertainment magazine of The Taos News, and has also written profiles of noted Taos elders for New Mexico Magazine.
David's prolific writing covers a wide range of topics: war and peace, domestic violence, comic book art, bottled water, the danger of cell phones, and the joys of fatherhood. As an actor, he has performed in theater, film, and industrials, as well as commercial print both in New York City and Taos.
"Both writing and acting are about storytelling," David says. "They're about connecting with your truth."
Connecting with your own truth led David to begin his memoir: Wow! Growing up in the South Bronx, a coming-of-age story about a young boy struggling between the brace of school-high grades and achievement-and the magnetic pull of the streets-adventure and rupture. Yet, the book is not all about trial and tribulation, but of boyhood wonder and humor amidst a tough neighborhood, and even tougher priests, brothers and nuns.
